About the Author

Hello, and welcome to Missives from Vireth.

My name is Ashley, and I’m the writer behind this growing archive of letters, lore, and fragments from a fantasy world slowly taking shape. Like many stories, this one began with a world that refused to stay in the margins of a notebook (and to allow me a full-night’s sleep.)

Today it has become a debut epic fantasy novel set in the realm of Vireth, where fading magic, fragile alliances, and dangerous prophecy threaten the future of the realm. If you’ve arrived here, you’re witnessing the early flight of that story…

And I’m glad to meet you!

The Woman Behind A. W. Slack

Outside of writing, I am full-time working mom living in Michigan. My days often involve deep diving into government data analysis and technical writing while wrangling two toddler boys, but any free moments tend to belong to worldbuilding and writing Project Feather.

I’m also passionate about:

Reading - I enjoy a wide variety of genres and aim to read at least 50 books each year. For 2026, writing is my main priority so that goal is lower. My page count is ever progressing in large thanks to audiobooks listened to during commutes, gym time, and performing chores around the house.
Weight-lifting - Once a long-distance runner, I found a love for weight-lifting after the birth of my first son. Now my gym time largely circulates around the squat rack, bench press, and other weight equipment.
Baking - Prior to my streaming aimed at kid-friendly shows, I was an avid cooking show follower. Great British Bakeoff is my all time favorite! I love to try my hand at different bakes from time-to-time, and am proud to say I have perfected macaron feet!
Hiking - My husband and I married in 2018. At that time, we set a goal to visit every United States’ national park before our 50th anniversary. We are slowly chipping away at that goal. Acadia has been our favorite visit so far.

Many of the quiet details of life, such as long nature walks or conversations over coffee, find their way into the stories I write.

My Current Work In Progress

Alongside Missives from Vireth, I am currently writing Project Feather (working title), an epic fantasy set in the realm of Vireth. Here, magic flows through elemental bloodlines and power is controlled by the Elementari.

When magic begins to fade, the elite turn to divine prophecy promising salvation through the White Feather. Raised to believe she must save magic at any cost, Vayda Vaelor steps into a fractured world and discovers it does not need a savior. Only flawed, resilient people who choose to carry the future together.

Blending epic political fantasy with romantic and dark fantasy elements, the story explores rebellion, faith, and the cost of belief in a world where prophecy may be less divine truth and more carefully crafted political weapon.

If you’d like to learn more about the story, its themes, and where the project currently stands, you can explore more on Project Feather below.

Why This Publication Exists

I began working on Project Feather nearly two years ago when on maternity leave with my second son. Like many writers, I started with the story itself. I spent hours drafting scenes, building characters, and slowly discovering the world of Vireth as it grew around them.

But once the first pages began to take shape, I also started researching what comes next. Editing. Querying. Publishing.

It didn’t take long to realize that the publishing world is vast, complex, and full of its own challenges. One thing became clear very quickly: stories rarely travel far on their own. They need readers who care about them.

So I created Missives from Vireth as a companion to my writing process. It is a place where I can share the world as it grows, invite readers into the early stages of the story, and document the journey from first draft to wherever the story may eventually land.

It’s also a record for myself. Writing a book is a long and often winding path, and I wanted a place to capture every milestone and lesson along the way.

Most of all, though, this publication exists because I’m incredibly excited about the world I’m building. And I hope some of that excitement finds its way to you.

At the moment, Missives from Vireth includes a few recurring types of posts:

  1. Skythread Letters - Informal messages about the writing process, updates on the novel, and reflections from the author’s desk.

  2. Halls of Aura Archives - Worldbuilding documents, histories, and lore from the world of Vireth.

  3. Ashen Quill Broadsheets - Columns and commentary on fantasy stories, books, and the craft of storytelling.

  4. Project Feather - Occasional behind-the-scenes looks at the development of the debut novel, including small fragments of the story itself.

From time to time, you may also find some loose feathers within Beyond Vireth, which are short stories or writing pieces from outside the world of Vireth shared simply as examples of my writing voice.

Stories rarely arrive fully formed. More often they appear as fragments. Missives from Vireth is where those fragments live in terms of Project Feather.
